Understanding Sebum & Oily Contamination on Automotive Leather

Why Do Automotive Leather Seats Become Shiny?

The areas that receive the most human contact often change first.

Headrests encounter hair and scalp oils. Armrests receive skin and hand oils. Steering wheels are repeatedly handled. Seat bolsters receive contact from clothing and skin during entry and exit.

Over time, these residues can combine with:

  • Sweat
  • Dust
  • Sunscreen
  • Cosmetics
  • Leather conditioners
  • Waxes
  • Dressing products

The result can be a dark, greasy, sticky, or unusually shiny surface.

Contamination or Finish Wear?

This distinction is important.

A shiny leather surface does not automatically mean that the leather needs refinishing.

The appearance may be caused by removable contamination—or it may be caused by permanent changes to the finish.

A simple diagnostic approach is:

Clean → Rinse → Dry → Inspect

If the original matte appearance returns, contamination was a major contributor.

If the shine remains, the surface may have experienced polishing, abrasion, or finish wear.

Why Sebum Requires a Different Approach

Sebum is not simply loose dirt sitting on top of leather.

Repeated exposure can create a persistent oily film that attracts additional soil and interacts with residues from previous leather-care products.

This is why repeatedly wiping the surface with a general cleaner may produce disappointing results.

The objective is to:

Target → Emulsify → Extract → Rinse → Inspect

rather than simply spreading the contamination around.

Why the Gel Matters

The advantage of Degreaser 7.5 is not simply that it is “stronger.”

The gel provides application control.

Instead of allowing a watery degreaser to immediately migrate across the leather, the operator can apply a small quantity exactly where contamination is concentrated.

This is particularly useful around:

  • Perforations
  • Ventilation holes
  • Stitching
  • Seat seams
  • Headrests
  • Armrests
  • Steering wheels

Restore the leather before refining its appearance.

Do not assume that a shiny surface needs a new finish.

First determine whether the appearance is caused by contamination, product buildup, wear, or a combination of factors.
