Why Blood Is Difficult to Remove
Blood behaves differently from most stains because it contains both proteins and iron.
As blood dries:
✔ Proteins coagulate and bond to the nubuck fibers.
✔ Iron oxidizes from bright red to dark brown or nearly black.
✔ Oxidized iron reacts with the leather tannage, producing deep, ink-like discoloration.
Removing only the visible stain often leaves hidden iron contamination behind.

Instruction
1️⃣ Step 1 — Protein Digestion
Blood Digest 10 (pH 10)
Purpose
Digest and release coagulated blood proteins from the nubuck fiber structure.
Recommended Dwell Time
10–30 minutes
Procedure
- Apply Blood Digest 10 directly to the stain, keeping treatment confined to the affected area whenever possible.
- Avoid unnecessarily wetting clean surrounding nubuck.
- Keep the treated area continuously moist throughout the dwell period.
- Do not allow the solution to dry.
- Using a cotton swab or a bamboo skewer wrapped with Towel 5, gently work and lift dissolved contamination from the fibers.
- Continue extracting until the towel shows progressively less residue.
- Reapply as necessary until the stain is substantially exhausted and further extraction produces little or no contamination.
- Proceed to the Intermediate Rinse once the protein stain begins to lighten.
Important
Do not exceed the recommended dwell time, as prolonged alkaline exposure may weaken the collagen fiber structure.
2️⃣ Step 2 — Intermediate Rinse
Rinse 4.0 (pH 4.0)
Purpose
Remove dissolved protein residues while returning the leather toward its natural acidic balance.
Treatment Time
Immediate
Procedure
- Apply Rinse 4.0 using a damp sponge.
- Blot with a clean white absorbent towel.
- Continue rinsing and extracting until no further residue transfers to the towel.
- Replace towels as they become soiled.
White towels make residue removal easier to monitor while preventing dye contamination from colored cloths.
3️⃣ Step 3 — Iron Chelation
Blood Chelate 1.0 (pH 1.0)
Purpose
Chelate oxidized iron responsible for persistent dark brown or black discoloration remaining after protein removal.
Recommended Dwell Time
3–5 minutes
Maximum
10 minutes
Procedure
- Apply Blood Chelate 1.0 only after protein residues have been removed.
- Keep treatment confined to the stained area whenever possible.
- Maintain a moist surface throughout treatment.
- Do not allow the solution to dry.
- Using a cotton swab or a bamboo skewer wrapped with Towel 5, gently work and extract loosened iron contamination.
- Repeat the treatment until discoloration begins to diminish and extraction produces a clean towel.
- Proceed immediately to the Stabilization Rinse.
Important
Do not exceed the recommended dwell time, as prolonged acidic exposure may weaken the collagen fiber structure.
4️⃣ Step 4 — Stabilization
Rinse 4.0 (pH 4.0)
Purpose
Return the nubuck to its stable Leather-Safe™ pH range (approximately pH 3.0–5.0) following chelation.
Treatment Time
1–2 minutes
Procedure
- Thoroughly rinse the treated area with Rinse 4.0.
- Blot away excess moisture using a clean white towel.
- Allow the nubuck to dry naturally at room temperature.
- Once dry, inspect the stain before repeating any treatment cycle if necessary.
This stabilization step restores the leather to a chemically balanced condition, preparing it for the subsequent Hydrator 3.3, Fatliquor 5.0, and Conditioner 3.4 restoration steps.
