Leather Doctor® Leather Rinse 5.0 is a professionally formulated, mildly acidic rinse designed to follow leather cleaning and degreasing treatments.
- Its purpose is not simply to adjust the pH of water.
Leather Rinse 5.0 is formulated to help remove:
- Suspended soil
- Emulsified oils and grease
- Residual conditioner contamination
- Working surfactant
- Other removable cleaning chemistry
from the treated leather surface.
Its controlled target pH of 5.0 helps bring the leather toward the intended post-treatment condition without leaving behind a sticky or tacky cleaning residue.
- The Degreaser extracts. The Rinse removes.
The Second Half of the Cleaning System:
A degreaser and a rinse perform different functions.
- Degreaser — Extract
The preceding cleaner or degreaser loosens, emulsifies, and suspends unwanted contamination.
- Rinse — Remove
This is why a formulated rinse is different from simply wiping with water.
- A rinse is not just pH-adjusted water. It is the removal stage of the cleaning system.
Why Leather Rinse 5.0?
- Target pH 5.0
- Leather Rinse 5.0 is calibrated to a mildly acidic pH 5.0 for its intended role in the cleaning system.
- The pH target is part of the formulation, but it is not the sole purpose of the product.
Removes Working Surfactant:
- During cleaning, surfactants help loosen and suspend contamination.
- Those working surfactants must subsequently be removed.
Incomplete removal may leave behind a residue that contributes to an undesirable:
- Sticky feel
- Tacky feel
- Coated sensation
- Greasy surface feel
Leather Rinse 5.0 is formulated as part of the removal process to help minimize this problem.
Removes Suspended Contamination:
After degreasing, the leather may contain suspended:
- Oil
- Grease
- Body-oil residue
- Conditioner residue
- Soil
- Other released contamination
The Rinse helps carry this material away from the treated surface.
Clean Surface Without Unnecessary Residue:
The objective is not simply to make the leather wet again.
The objective is to remove the working chemistry and suspended contamination so the leather can dry cleanly and be properly assessed.

Step 1 — Leather Degreaser 7.5
- Target & Extract
Leather Degreaser 7.5 is designed for predominantly non-absorbent finished leather where accumulated:
- Conditioners
- Sebum
- Body oils
- Grease
- Sweat residue
- Oily care-product residue
have overloaded the surface.
The Degreaser loosens, emulsifies, and suspends the contamination.
Step 2 — Leather Rinse 5.0
- Remove Suspended Contamination & Working Chemistry
Leather Rinse 5.0 is then used to help remove the suspended contamination and the working surfactant from the preceding degreasing treatment.
Complete Module:
- Leather Degreaser 7.5 → Leather Rinse 5.0 → Dry → Inspect
Only after the leather has dried should you determine whether additional conditioning, protection, restoration, repair, or refinishing is actually required.
Why Not Just Use Water?
Water can dilute and physically wipe away some surface material, but it is not equivalent to a purpose-formulated rinse.After a degreasing treatment, the leather may still contain a mixture of:
- Suspended oils
- Soil
- Emulsified contamination
- Residual surfactant
- Other working chemistry
The purpose of Leather Rinse 5.0 is to assist in removing that material as part of the complete cleaning process.
Dilution is not the same as removal.
A Rinse Is Not a Conditioner:
Leather Rinse 5.0 is not primarily a leather conditioner.Its role is to complete the cleaning process.
After:
- Degrease → Rinse → Dry → Inspect
the leather can then be evaluated for its actual condition.
If the leather requires:
- Rejuvenation
- Softening
- Fatliquoring
- Conditioning
- Repair
- Refinishing
those are separate treatment decisions.
- Clean first. Diagnose second. Condition only when needed.
When to Use Leather Rinse 5.0
Leather Rinse 5.0 is appropriate as a formulated rinse after compatible leather cleaning or degreasing treatments where removal of suspended contamination and working surfactant is required.
It is especially important after:

Surface Condition Determines the Degreasing System

Predominantly non-absorbent finished leather
- Leather Degreaser 7.5 → Leather Rinse 5.0
Semi-absorbent, absorbent, or non-absorbent leather that has become absorbent
- Leather Degreaser 4.4 → Leather Rinse 4.4
Vegetable-tanned Vachetta with tannin-related darkening

Contaminated absorbent leather with deeper sweat/body-oil and alkaline-related symptoms

Choose the degreasing pathway according to the leather's present behavior — not simply its name.
What Leather Rinse 5.0 Does Not Do
Leather Rinse 5.0 is not intended to:
- Repair cracking
- Restore abrasion
- Replace missing finish
- Restore permanently polished leather
- Reverse structural deterioration
- Act as a complete conditioning treatment
Its purpose is to complete the removal stage of the cleaning process.
After Rinsing:
- Allow the leather to dry naturally before making the next treatment decision.
Once dry:
- Inspect the surface.
- Evaluate the hand feel.
- Recheck absorbency where appropriate.
- Determine what the leather actually needs.
Do not automatically apply conditioner simply because a cleaning treatment has been performed.
A properly rinsed and dried surface provides a cleaner basis for the next diagnostic decision.
