One of the greatest misconceptions in leather restoration is that aniline vegetable-tanned leather has only one color.
In reality, it has two separate color systems, and each behaves differently throughout the life of the leather.
Understanding this distinction is the key to accurate color restoration.
The Original Tannin Color
Vegetable tanning gives leather its original tannin color.
Because different parts of every hide absorb tannins differently during tanning, the natural color is never perfectly uniform.
This natural variation allows the leather's grain, wrinkles, scars, growth marks, and other unique characteristics to remain fully visible, giving every hide its own individual character.
To visually blend these natural color variations without hiding the leather's character, a transparent aniline dye is applied after tanning.
As the leather ages, the original tannin gradually becomes darker through natural oxidation.
Water exposure or repeated cleaning with alkaline saddle soaps may also disturb the tannin color, producing discoloration that is different from normal color fading.
When this occurs, the appropriate restoration route is:

Why is Hydrator 3.3 used after Dye 42?
After Dye 42 has dried, Hydrator 3.3 helps even out dye absorbency throughout the leather.
At the same time, it helps wick unnecessary excess dyestuff to the surface, where it is extracted before it can later cause unwanted dye bleeding when the leather comes into contact with water.
Once the excess dyestuff has been extracted, Fatliquor 5.0 replenishes the leather's original fat and oil.
Together they continue restoring the leather after the color has been restored.
