Targeted Treatment for Urine Contamination on Protected Leather

Leather Doctor® Protected Leather Anti-Urine 4.5 is a targeted treatment for urine contamination and associated odor on finished/protected leather.

It is designed for situations where urine contamination affects the protected surface and may present as:

Odor · Staining · Yellowing · Discoloration · Residue

Before treatment, identify the leather and determine how the actual affected area responds to water.

Identify the leather. Test the affected area. Then treat the contamination.


Before You Begin

This procedure is intended for finished/protected leather.

Do not automatically apply Anti-Urine 4.5 to suede, nubuck, pure aniline, or other absorbent or unfinished leather.

Also determine whether household products, leather cleaners, conditioners, solvents, disinfectants, or other treatments have already been used.

Previous treatments may have altered the original finish and can affect both water absorbency and the final appearance.

A failed cleaning attempt is part of the diagnosis.


Step 1 — Inspect the Affected Area

Begin with the actual urine-affected area.

Look for:

  • Yellowing
  • Darkening
  • Discoloration
  • Visible residue
  • Changes in gloss
  • Changes in surface feel
  • Worn or deteriorated finish
  • Creases and grooves
  • Seams and stitching
  • Cushion gaps
  • Perforations
  • Areas where urine may have traveled

Do not assume that the visible boundary represents the complete contamination.

Follow the path of the contamination, not just the shape of the visible mark.


Step 2 — Perform the Water Absorbency Test

The water absorbency test evaluates the actual condition of the affected surface.

Always Test the Affected Area

Place a small drop of distilled water directly on the stained or contaminated area.

Do not rely on an unused or inconspicuous area alone.

A rarely used area may retain its original protected finish while a frequently used affected area may have developed:

  • Wear
  • Micro-crazing
  • Finish deterioration
  • Previous chemical alteration

The affected area may therefore behave differently from the original untouched surface.


Allow Sufficient Observation Time

Do not judge the result immediately.

An oily, greasy, or heavily conditioned surface may temporarily repel water and distort the apparent absorbency.

Allow the water drop to remain undisturbed and observe its behavior over time.

The longer the water remains on the surface before evaporating, the more reliable the observation becomes.

Observe whether the water:

  • Remains beaded on the surface
  • Slowly spreads or penetrates
  • Causes the leather underneath to darken

The affected area is behaving as a non-absorbent surface, consistent with a protected finish.

Water slowly penetrates or darkens the leather

The affected area may be behaving as a semi-absorbent or absorbent surface, possibly due to wear, micro-crazing, finish deterioration, or previous treatment.

Test the condition where the problem exists—not only where the leather looks untouched.


Step 3 — Perform a Product Compatibility Test

The water absorbency test and the product compatibility test serve different purposes.

Water absorbency diagnosis

Test the affected area.

Product compatibility

Apply a small amount of Anti-Urine 4.5 to an inconspicuous area and allow it to dry before evaluating the result.

Check for unwanted changes in:

  • Color
  • Gloss
  • Surface feel
  • Finish appearance

Do not proceed with full application if the compatibility test produces an unacceptable change.


Step 4 — Prepare the Surface When Necessary

Anti-Urine 4.5 is a targeted urine treatment, not a general-purpose cleaner.

If the protected leather has accumulated:

  • Body oils
  • Grease
  • Dirt
  • Previous conditioners
  • Other surface soiling

prepare the surface before treating the urine contamination.

For heavily soiled protected leather, use:

Degreaser 2.2 → Rinse 3.0

Degreaser 2.2

Removes accumulated surface soiling that may interfere with treatment.

Rinse 3.0

Removes the Degreaser 2.2 residues and prepares the protected leather for Anti-Urine 4.5.

Prepare the surface according to its condition. Then treat the urine contamination specifically.


Step 5 — Apply Anti-Urine 4.5

Apply Anti-Urine 4.5 only to the urine-affected area and its immediate contamination path.

Use a clean white microfiber towel for broad surface application.

Lightly apply enough product to evenly treat the affected surface.

Do not unnecessarily saturate:

  • The leather
  • The leather backing
  • Cushion foam
  • Other internal upholstery materials

Work methodically across:

  • The visible urine-affected area
  • The surrounding contamination path
  • Grooves
  • Creases
  • Accessible seams
  • Other areas identified during inspection

Do not aggressively scrub.

Controlled application is more important than excessive wetting.


Step 6 — Work Accessible Seams, Creases and Grooves

Urine can collect or migrate into areas that are difficult to reach with a towel alone.

For accessible:

  • Seams
  • Stitching
  • Grooves
  • Creases
  • Cushion joints

use a small soft-bristled leather brush where necessary.

Work gently.

The objective is to reach accessible contamination without unnecessary abrasion or saturation.

When contamination has traveled along a seam, treatment may need to extend beyond the obvious visible stain.


Step 7 — Allow 24 Hours of Natural Drying

Allow Anti-Urine 4.5 to remain in contact with the affected surface and air-dry naturally for 24 hours.

Do not use:

  • Hair dryers
  • Heat guns
  • Radiators
  • Other direct heat sources

The treatment should remain undisturbed during this period.

Do not judge the final appearance while the leather is still damp.


Step 8 — Evaluate the Result

After the 24-hour drying period and once the leather is completely dry, evaluate:

  • Urine odor
  • Visible residue
  • Staining
  • Yellowing
  • Discoloration
  • Surface appearance
  • Surface feel

The important question is:

What remains after the urine contamination has been treated and the leather has dried?


Step 9 — Understand Persistent Yellowing

Anti-Urine 4.5 is not a bleaching treatment.

It contains no bleaching ingredient specifically intended to remove established urochrome yellowing.

Its formulation has a different purpose:

Citric Acid at pH 4.5
→ urine-treatment function

Tea Tree + Eucalyptus
→ primarily deodorizing and odor-control function

Therefore, successful treatment of urine contamination and odor does not necessarily mean that established yellow coloration will disappear.

When Yellowing Remains

If yellow coloration remains after treatment, determine whether it represents:

  • Accessible urine residue
  • Set urochrome or other urine-related colorants
  • A change to the protective finish
  • A change to the underlying leather
  • Previous chemical damage

Do not continue applying Anti-Urine 4.5 simply to chase persistent yellow coloration.

A separate corrective treatment may be appropriate.

For established yellowing on protected leather, Urine 2.1 may be used as a separate progressive corrective treatment, beginning at 1/3 strength and progressing toward full strength as appropriate, with evaluation between stages.

Urine 2.1 does not contain a bleaching ingredient.

Its corrective action is based on its different formulation and treatment chemistry.


Step 10 — Evaluate Persistent Odor

If noticeable urine odor remains after appropriate treatment and complete drying, do not automatically apply more Anti-Urine 4.5.

Reinspect:

  • Seams
  • Cushion gaps
  • Perforations
  • Worn areas
  • Edges
  • Areas where urine may have migrated

If urine has penetrated into:

  • Foam
  • Padding
  • Backing materials
  • Internal upholstery structures

the source may be beneath the leather.

Diagnose deeper before applying more product.

A leather-surface treatment cannot be expected to remove contamination originating deep inside cushion foam.


Step 11 — Post-Treatment Safety Wipe for Households With Cats

There is no routine rinse required after Anti-Urine 4.5.

For furniture in a household where cats have access to the treated surface:

After the full 24-hour drying period, and only once the treated surface is completely dry, wipe the area with a clean, slightly damp cloth, preferably using distilled water.

This wipe is solely a pet-safety precaution intended to remove remaining accessible botanical residues from the surface.

It is not a leather-rinsing step and is not required for the leather treatment itself.

Keep cats away from the treated area during application and throughout the 24-hour drying period.


Step 12 — Condition After Complete Drying

Once:

  • The treatment has completed its 24-hour drying period
  • The surface has been evaluated
  • Any necessary pet-safety wipe has been completed

apply an appropriate Leather Doctor® conditioner for protected leather.

Conditioning is the leather-care step, not part of the Anti-Urine treatment itself.

Treat → Dry → Evaluate → Condition


Targeted Application — Not Full-Furniture Saturation

Anti-Urine 4.5 should be used only where urine contamination exists.

Do not treat an entire sofa simply because one area has been contaminated.

Treat:

The affected area + the immediate contamination path

while avoiding unnecessary wetting of unaffected leather and internal upholstery.

The required amount varies according to:

  • Size of the affected area
  • Severity of contamination
  • Age of contamination
  • Surface condition
  • Creases and seams
  • Previous treatment history

Use enough for even treatment. Do not unnecessarily saturate.


When to Stop and Reassess

Stop treatment and reassess when:

  • The leather shows an unacceptable finish change.
  • Water testing indicates significant absorption or finish failure.
  • Previous chemical treatment has substantially altered the surface.
  • Yellowing remains unchanged after appropriate treatment.
  • Odor persists despite appropriate surface treatment.
  • Contamination appears to originate inside the cushion.
  • Additional product would require unnecessary saturation.

When the result stops improving, diagnose the cause rather than simply applying more product.


Simplified Treatment Logic

For confirmed protected/finished leather:

1. Identify the leather

2. Inspect the affected area

3. Water Absorbency Test — affected area

4. Product Compatibility Test — inconspicuous area

5. Prepare if necessary: Degreaser 2.2 → Rinse 3.0

6. Apply Anti-Urine 4.5 to affected area

7. Treat accessible seams and creases

8. Air-dry for 24 hours

9. Evaluate odor, residue and discoloration

10. For persistent yellowing, consider separate progressive Urine 2.1 treatment

11. For households with cats: perform pet-safety wipe after complete drying

12. Condition protected leather

Final Reminder

Protected Leather Anti-Urine 4.5 is a targeted treatment—not a universal leather cleaner and not a bleaching treatment.

The best results come from:

Identify → Prepare → Treat → Dry → Evaluate → Correct if Needed → Condition → Preserve

The goal is not to keep applying product until every visible change disappears.

The goal is to identify what remains, understand why it remains, and choose the appropriate next treatment.
