Absorbent Leather Anti-Urine 4.2
- Deep-Penetration Urine Neutralizer & Urine Destroyer for Absorbent Leather
Leather Doctor® Anti-Urine 4.2 is a pH 4.2 treatment formulated for absorbent and porous leather where urine contamination and odor may have penetrated below the visible surface.
- Its core odor-neutralizing and urine-destroying action is adapted for deep penetration, allowing the treatment to follow the path of urine retained within absorbent leather.
- For protected, non-absorbent leather, use Non-Absorbent Leather Anti-Urine 4.5.
The treatment has to follow the path of the urine.
Developed for Absorbent Leather:
Anti-Urine 4.2 is intended for absorbent leather and other porous leather surfaces, including:
- Aniline leather
- Semi-aniline leather
- Suede
- Nubuck
- Vachetta
- Veg-Tan leather
- Hair-on hide
- Other absorbent or porous leather
A leather originally manufactured as protected may also become absorbent through micro-crazing, creases, cracks, or deterioration of the topcoat.
When urine has penetrated through a deteriorated protected surface and the affected area has become absorbent, the Anti-Urine 4.2 deep-treatment pathway is appropriate.
Why Anti-Urine 4.2?

- Anti-Urine 4.2 is formulated at pH 4.2, within Leather Doctor®'s Leather-Safe™ Zone of pH 3.0–5.0.
- The formulation is designed to provide urine-neutralizing and urine-destroying action while maintaining a more leather-compatible treatment environment.
Deep-Penetration Treatment:
- Urine odor may remain even when the leather looks clean because contamination can be retained below the visible surface.
- Anti-Urine 4.2 is designed for deep penetration into absorbent leather, rather than simply treating the visible surface.
Controlled Whole-Panel Wetting:
- Do not treat only the visible stain or strongest odor spot.
- The affected leather panel is wetted evenly from seam to seam so the treatment can follow the identified urine pathway while reducing the risk of visible wetting boundaries.
- This is especially important for light- and medium-colored absorbent leather, where isolated wetting can produce rings, halos, or tide lines during drying.
Follow the Path of the Urine:
- Urine may travel through seams, crevices, cushion edges, and other absorbent areas before reaching the underside of upholstered furniture.
- The treatment area should therefore extend to the last identified trace of contamination.
- Follow the urine path. Reach the last trace.
Same Core Anti-Urine Action, Adapted for Absorbent Leather
Anti-Urine 4.2 and Non-Absorbent Leather Anti-Urine 4.5 use the same basic odor-neutralizing and urine-destroying chemistry, with each formulation adapted to the way the leather accepts treatment.
Anti-Urine 4.2
- Absorbent leather → deep penetration
Anti-Urine 4.5
- Protected / non-absorbent leather → controlled surface treatment
The difference is therefore not simply the pH.
- The leather's present absorbency determines the treatment technique.
Before Anti-Urine 4.2:
- For best results, first identify the current condition of the affected leather.
- Water Absorbency Test
- Perform the Water Absorbency Test directly on the urine-affected area.
- Do not rely solely on an unaffected area.
- A normally non-absorbent leather may become absorbent through urine contamination, micro-crazing, cracks, or deterioration. A previous treatment attempt may also alter the original surface absorbency.
- The affected area should be evaluated according to how the leather behaves now.
Wet Hand Test:
- Check the affected leather for tackiness, stickiness, or sliminess.
- These conditions may indicate adverse effects associated with urine contamination or deterioration of the leather texture or topcoat.
- When these conditions are present, Acidifier 2.0 may be required as a condition-dependent step before continuing with the Anti-Urine treatment.
Surface Sheen:
- Compare the affected area with an unaffected area of the same leather.
- A noticeable loss of sheen may indicate deterioration or alteration of the original topcoat.
- Where required, a matching topcoat is applied after successful urine decontamination and restoration, before Conditioner 3.2+.
Treatment System:
Absorbent Leather
- Degreaser 4.5 → Rinse 4.5 → Anti-Urine 4.2 → Hydrator 3.3 → Fatliquor 5.0+ → Matching Topcoat, when required → Conditioner 3.2+
Pre-Cleaning Use:
- Degreaser 4.5 → Rinse 4.5
Remove accessible surface contamination before beginning the Anti-Urine treatment.
Anti-Urine 4.2:
- Apply Anti-Urine 4.2 using a controlled saturation technique.
- Wet the entire affected panel evenly from seam to seam rather than creating an isolated wet spot.
Hydrator 3.3:
- Following the Anti-Urine treatment, Hydrator 3.3 is used for reverse transfer, helping move dissolved contamination and residues toward the surface for removal.
- Hydrator 3.3 then relaxes the leather structure and creates a pathway for Fatliquor 5.0+ to penetrate effectively.
Hydrator 3.3 relaxes the structure. Fatliquor 5.0+ follows the pathway.
Fatliquor 5.0+:
- Fatliquor 5.0+ replenishes fat and oil within the leather fiber structure after deeper wet processing.
- The objective is to restore lubrication, flexibility, softness, and a supple leather feel.
- The “+” formulation also imparts a classic leather scent, creating a more refined olfactory experience.
Matching Topcoat, When Required
- If urine contamination or previous treatment has deteriorated the original topcoat, apply a matching topcoat after successful decontamination and restoration, before Conditioner 3.2+.
Conditioner 3.2+
- Conditioner 3.2+ completes the final conditioning stage.
- It provides a soft, smooth leather feel, while the “+” formulation also imparts a classic leather scent for a more refined finishing experience.
How to Apply Anti-Urine 4.2:
1. Inspect
Trace the urine pathway before treatment.
For upholstered furniture, inspect:
- Cushion seams and edges
- Crevices
- Underside of cushions
- Bottom of the sofa or chair
- Dust cloth
- Wooden frame or moving structural rail
- Other areas along the identified urine pathway
A UV black light may help reveal fluorescent traces associated with urine contamination.
2. Prepare:
- Use: Degreaser 4.5 → Rinse 4.5
3. Apply Anti-Urine 4.2:
- Do not apply only to the visible stain.
- Wet the entire affected panel evenly from seam to seam, following the identified urine pathway.
- The leather may temporarily darken while wet. This is normal for absorbent leather.
4. Allow Natural Drying:
- Allow to air dry naturally in a well-ventilated room (24 to 48 hours).
- Do not use a hair dryer, radiator, or other direct heat source.
5. Reverse Transfer:
- Use Hydrator 3.3 as the reverse-transfer treatment to help move dissolved residues toward the surface for removal.
6. Restore:
- Continue with:
- Hydrator 3.3 → Fatliquor 5.0+ → Matching Topcoat, when required → Conditioner 3.2+
Treatment Volume Matters
- Anti-Urine 4.2 must be applied in sufficient volume to follow the contamination pathway.
- A small amount of product applied only to the visible surface may not be enough when urine has penetrated deeply into leather or cushion materials.
- For a typical cat urine discharge that has penetrated into a cushion, treatment may require an amount comparable to, or potentially greater than, the original urine volume.
- In some situations, approximately the same volume or up to twice the estimated urine volume may be required, depending on the amount of urine, depth of penetration, distribution, absorbency, and previous treatment history.
- This is a practical guideline, not a fixed dosage formula.
- Treat the contaminated pathway—not simply the visible stain.
Why Light and Medium Absorbent Leather Requires Special Technique:
- Absorbent leather can darken temporarily when wetted.
- If only a small area is wetted, the difference between the wet and dry leather can produce a visible ring, halo, or tide line after drying.
- This effect is often more noticeable on light- and medium-colored absorbent leather.
- The solution is even panel wetting, not avoiding wet treatment.
- Wet the affected panel evenly from seam to seam and follow with the appropriate Hydrator 3.3 reverse-transfer process.
- Do not spot-wet absorbent leather. Treat the panel evenly.
When Odor Remains:
If odor remains after treating the leather, do not assume that the leather itself is the only source.
Urine may have penetrated into:
- Cushion foam
- Batting
- Backing
- Dust cloth
- Wooden structural components
- Other absorbent upholstery materials
Return to the original urine pathway and inspect the areas where the contamination may have continued beyond the leather.
The treatment has to follow the path of the urine—from the entry point to the last trace.
Important:
- Always test first in an inconspicuous area.
- Perform the Water Absorbency Test directly on the affected urine area.
- Check for tackiness, stickiness, or sliminess.
- Check for loss of sheen or topcoat deterioration.
- Do not use isolated spot-wetting on light or medium-colored absorbent leather.
- Do not force-dry with direct heat.
- Do not assume the strongest odor location is the complete contamination area.
- Where urine has penetrated into internal upholstery materials, treatment of the leather alone may not be sufficient.
