Fatliquoring is the process of replenishing leather with a well-balanced formulation of fats and oils designed to provide fullness and lubrication, imparting suppleness and resilience.
Fatliquor 5.0 is formulated specifically for this process.
To understand why Fatliquor 5.0 is so important, we must first understand how leather is processed.
Before Leather Was Leather
Leather is not simply manufactured in a factory.
It is a by-product of the food industry, where the skin is removed at the abattoir and shipped for processing.
Fresh animal skin is perishable.
Left untreated, it will decompose.
Leather processing transforms this perishable skin into a non-perishable, supple, useful natural protein material that is made into articles and goods for human comfort.
This transformation is one of the oldest examples of the science and art of preserving animal skin for long-term human use.
Modern commercial leather processing is not the only way leather can be produced. Traditional methods, including indigenous processes such as brain tanning and smoking, also transform perishable skin into useful leather.

The Leather-Processing Sequence
Leather processing can involve several major stages. The exact methods vary according to the leather being produced and the process used.
1. Beamhouse — The hide is cleaned of flesh and degreased, so the collagen protein fibers are prepared for tanning.
2. Tanning — The collagen protein fibers are preserved against decomposition and transformed from perishable skin into stable leather.
3. Dyeing — Colour is introduced where required.
4. Fatliquoring — A formulation of fats and oils carrying an ionic negative (-ve) charge is introduced to provide internal lubrication, fullness, and suppleness.
5. Finishing — The surface is finished as required.
Not every leather follows exactly the same sequence or uses the same materials.
Depending on the tanning and processing method, the resulting leather can have very different characteristics.
Why Are the Natural Fats and Oils Degreased?
If fats and oils are necessary for leather performance, why are they degreased during processing?
The natural fats and oils found in fresh animal skin are degreased during the early leather-processing stages because the collagen protein fibers must first be cleaned so the tanning agents can penetrate and preserve them from decomposition.
The fats and oils are not degreased because they are bad.
They are degreased because the collagen protein fibers must first be cleaned for tanning.
After tanning has preserved the collagen structure, the leather requires an internal fat and oil system to provide the fullness and lubrication necessary for continued performance.
This is where fatliquoring takes place.
Why Fatliquor Exists
Fatliquor exists to replenish the internal fat and oil system required for leather performance.
Fat provides fullness.
Oil provides lubrication.
Together, they help the collagen fibers and fibrils move against one another during bending, flexing, stretching, compression, and recovery.
This internal fat and oil system is not simply a surface treatment.
It is part of the leather's internal performance.
Fat Provides Fullness
Fat contributes body and fullness.
It helps maintain the leather's substance and resilience.
When leather becomes depleted of its internal fat, it can become thin, flat, and lacking in body.
Replacing this fat helps replenish the fullness originally established during leather processing.
A good example is a very soft Chanel quilted lambskin handbag.
When the lambskin becomes depleted of its internal fat, the rounded convex appearance of the diamond quilting can become flatter or concave.
The stitching has not changed.
The leather between the stitching has lost its original fullness.
After proper hydration with Hydrator 3.3 and replenishment with Fatliquor 5.0, the leather can regain much of its original body and fullness, allowing the quilting to recover more of its characteristic rounded appearance.
For very soft and sensitive lambskin, maintaining the original fullness is easier than waiting until significant depletion has occurred and then attempting to revive what has been lost.
Oil Provides Lubrication
Oil provides internal lubrication.
Every time leather bends, flexes, stretches, compresses, or recovers, millions of collagen fibrils move against one another.
Think of them as millions of interconnecting hinges.
The oil helps these microscopic hinges move smoothly against one another.
Without sufficient internal lubrication, the fibers can become increasingly resistant to movement.
Leather gradually becomes stiffer.
Its drapery becomes stiff.
Fine flex breaks can become coarse breaks.
Temporary wrinkles can become stiff, permanent creases, which can lead to rips, tears, and cracks.
With continued use, the leather can lose the natural movement and resilience that made it useful and comfortable.
Why Fatliquoring Is Not Oiling
Neither function replaces the other.
Fatliquor combines both within a balanced internal system.
Oil alone is different.
Oil does not carry the ionic charge required to be attracted to the leather fiber.
Its larger molecules have difficulty penetrating the dense collagen fiber structure.
When oil is stuffed into leather, much of it can remain loosely held within the structure or on the surface.
What is stuffed in can readily work its way back out.
This can result in darkening and an oily, sticky surface.
Fatliquor 5.0 is distinctly different.
It is formulated at pH 5.0 with an ionic negative (-ve) charge.
When the leather fiber has been properly prepared and acidified, the collagen protein fiber carries an ionic positive (+ve) charge.
The negative Fatliquor 5.0 system is therefore attracted to the positive leather fiber.
Hydrogen bonding further supports the interaction within the leather's protein structure.
The objective is not simply to stuff oil into leather.
The objective is to replenish the internal fat and oil system through an emulsion and ionic attraction.
Fatliquoring is not oiling.
When Stuffed Oil Finds Its Way Back Out
A saddle that has been heavily treated with Neatsfoot oil provides a useful real-world example.
When concentrated oil is repeatedly stuffed into leather, excess oil can remain loosely held within the structure or on the surface.
With continued use, repeated flexing, pressure, and warmth can move the oil toward the surface.
The evidence may eventually appear on the rider's clothing.
Oil transfers from the saddle onto the fabric.
What was stuffed into the leather is slowly finding its way back out.
This illustrates why stuffing leather with oil is fundamentally different from replenishing its internal fat and oil system through fatliquoring.
Why Fatliquor Is an Emulsion
Fatliquor is not applied as concentrated oil.
Concentrated oil does not move through the dense leather fiber structure as readily on its own.
Fatliquor is therefore prepared as a water-encasing emulsion.
The microscopic fat and oil particles are carried throughout the hydrated collagen fiber structure.
The water serves as the transport medium.
It carries the fat and oil into the millions of interconnecting hinges where lubrication is required.
As ionic attraction takes place, the negative (-ve) charged fatliquor system becomes associated with the positive (+ve) leather fiber.
As drying takes place, the free water leaves the leather.
The purpose of the water is transportation, not permanent water retention within the leather.
The emulsion also helps distribute microscopic fat and oil particles throughout the cleaned fiber structure rather than leaving a heavy layer of concentrated oil on the surface.
This helps avoid the darkening and oily, sticky surface commonly associated with excessive oiling.
The water transports.
The leather fiber attracts.
The water leaves.
The fat and oil remain associated with the fiber structure.
Why Hydrator 3.3 Comes First
Fatliquor 5.0 follows hydration.
The leather first needs to be properly cleaned.
Hydrator 3.3 then relaxes the cleaned collagen fiber structure.
This creates the hydrated condition required for the Fatliquor emulsion to distribute through the leather structure.
Fatliquor 5.0 follows.
Hydrator 3.3 relaxes.
Fatliquor 5.0 replenishes.
The two products therefore work as one system.
Inspection
Leather rarely becomes stiff overnight.
The changes develop gradually through use.
Identify the areas that receive repeated flexing, such as:

and saddle seat panels.
With careful inspection, we may identify changes in the leather's original movement, form, and shape.
The leather may reveal:

The leather may also become deformed from its original intended shape.
For leather furniture designed as an indoor soft sculpture, the original form is part of its usefulness and visual character.
Many modern classics, including the Eames Lounge Chair and other museum-displayed furniture designs, are recognized not only for their function but also for their distinctive leather-covered form.
When the leather loses fullness, lubrication, and resilience, the article can gradually lose the shape originally intended by its designer.
Depleted fatliquor can rob leather of its sleek elegance, leaving it looking saggy and lifeless.
The leather will reveal what has changed.

Preventive Fatliquoring
Leather does not always need to show severe signs of depletion before fatliquoring becomes useful.
In very soft and sensitive fine lambskin leathers, such as Chanel quilted lambskin, preventive fatliquoring is often better than waiting for visible signs of depletion.
Once significant fullness has been lost, the leather can become tougher to revive.
Maintaining the original fullness is easier than attempting to recover it after substantial depletion.
The purpose of preventive fatliquoring is not to make the leather different.
It is to help maintain the fullness, suppleness, and resilience originally established during leather processing.
After Fatliquoring
Fatliquoring is not judged simply by how much product has been applied.
The leather is inspected again after drying.
We may identify improvements in:
- fullness,
- suppleness,
- flexibility,
- resilience,
- natural drapery,
- and the original form of the leather article.
We also inspect the surface.
If the surface reveals appearance differences, especially on the frequently worn areas, refinishing may be required.
Refinishing is a separate process from fatliquoring.
Fatliquor 5.0 replenishes the internal fat and oil system.
Refinishing addresses the surface appearance where required.
The leather may need revitalization without refinishing.
It may need refinishing without fatliquoring.
It may need both.

Revitalization
Revitalization is the replacement of what is missing, diminishing, lost, or misplaced.
