Suede Dye Fix 2.8 (Fix 2.8) by Leather Doctor® is a professional water-based dye fixative formulated to improve dye stability in suede, nubuck, and roughout leather prone to color bleeding, crocking, and dye transfer.

Water-Based Pure Dye Fixative for Suede, Nubuck, and Roughout Leather

This product is recommended when loose or unstable dyes transfer onto clothing, hands, furnishings, or adjacent materials. Typical examples include new suede upholstery staining garments, handbags transferring color onto clothing, footwear bleeding when damp, or restored suede exhibiting dye migration after recoloring.

Excessive dye bleeding is often associated with pH imbalance, contamination, alkaline residues, improper dye fixation, or deteriorated leather structure. As a best practice, the suede should first be evaluated and corrected with Suede 4.0, Rinse 3.0, and Acidifier 2.0 to restore its natural pH balance. When dye instability persists after pH correction, Fix 2.8 is used to improve dye fixation and reduce further color migration.

Unlike film-forming coatings that may stiffen the nap or alter the tactile feel, Fix 2.8 functions as a pure dye fixative. Application by transfer with a damp white cotton terry towel allows the fixing agents to penetrate and bond with unstable dyes while preserving the suede's natural softness, breathability, finger-writing effect, and characteristic nap texture.

For optimum results, follow with Hydrator 3.3 and Fatliquor 5.0 to replenish internal moisture and lubrication. Complete the restoration with Conditioner 3.4 or Scented Conditioner 3.4+ for pH refinement, smooth feel, and reduced friction without stickiness.

  Benefits:

  • Improves dye fixation and reduces color bleeding, crocking, and dye transfer.
  • Enhances wet-rub fastness and resistance to moisture-related dye migration.
  • Preserves the natural suede nap, softness, breathability, and finger-writing effect.
  • Non-film-forming and non-stiffening.
  • Leaves no visible residue after drying.
  • Suitable for natural, vintage, restored, and re-dyed suede articles.
  • Compatible with Hydrator 3.3, Fatliquor 5.0, Conditioner 3.4, and Scented Conditioner 3.4+.
  • Ideal for suede garments, footwear, handbags, upholstery, saddlery, tack, and equestrian equipment.

 Recommended Preliminary Treatment:

 For excessive dye bleeding:

  1. Clean thoroughly with Suede 4.0.
  2. Rinse thoroughly with Rinse 3.0.
  3. Apply Acidifier 2.0 and allow sufficient dwell time.
  4. Towel extract and test for dye transfer using a clean white towel.
  5. Repeat Acidifier 2.0 treatment until dye bleeding is significantly reduced.
  6. Apply Fix 2.8 only when dye instability remains after pH balancing.

 Dilution Ratio:

1 part Fix 2.8 concentrate to 6 parts distilled water (1:6)

  • 4 oz Fill: Add 98 g distilled water.
  • 8 oz Fill: Add 195 g distilled water.
  • 16 oz Fill: Add 390 g distilled water.
  • 32 oz Fill: Add 778 g distilled water.

Mix thoroughly before use.

 Instructions

  1. Ensure the suede is clean and free from excess residues.
  2. Dilute Fix 2.8 as directed.
  3. Soak a clean white cotton terry towel with the solution.
  4. The towel should be thoroughly damp but not dripping.
  5. Wipe the entire suede surface evenly using overlapping strokes.
  6. Frequently refold the towel to a clean section as migrated dye is absorbed.
  7. Work in manageable sections while maintaining uniform coverage.
  8. Treat the entire panel or article to prevent uneven appearance or watermarking.
  9. Brush periodically to maintain nap separation and even distribution.
  10. Allow to dry naturally in open air away from direct heat.
  11. The water carrier evaporates completely, leaving only the active dye-fixing components.
  12. When dry, brush again to restore the suede nap and finger-writing effect.

 Post-Fix Conditioning:

After fixation is complete and the suede is fully dry:

 Internal Replenishment:

  • Apply Hydrator 3.3 to restore moisture content.
  • Apply Fatliquor 5.0 to replenish lubrication and softness.

 Surface Refinement:

  • Apply Conditioner 3.4 for a smooth, natural feel.
  • Or apply Conditioner 3.4+ for enhanced smoothness with a pleasant leather scent.

These treatments help reduce friction, improve flexibility, and maintain a supple, non-sticky finish.

 Professional Tips:

  • Use only distilled water for dilution.
  • Always test in an inconspicuous area before full application.
  • Treat the entire article rather than isolated spots whenever practical.
  • Change towel surfaces frequently to prevent redepositing migrated dyes.
  • Proper brushing during and after application is essential for optimal dye fixation and nap restoration.
  • Correcting pH imbalance with Acidifier 2.0 before fixation often substantially reduces dye bleeding and improves final results.
