Leather Doctor® Nubuck Dye Fix 2.8 is a professional water-based dye fixative formulated to stabilize loose or unstable dyestuff in absorbent Nubuck leather.

It is designed for Nubuck that continues to transfer color onto clothing, hands, towels, furnishings, or adjacent materials after proper cleaning and pH balancing.
Fix 2.8 helps improve dye fixation while preserving Nubuck’s natural softness, breathability, nap, and characteristic finger-writing effect.
Unlike film-forming coatings that can stiffen the nap or alter the tactile character of Nubuck, Fix 2.8 functions as a dye-fixing treatment rather than a surface coating. When properly applied, it helps stabilize mobile dyestuff without creating a visible film over the napped surface.

What Causes Nubuck Dye to Rub Off?

Color transfer is not always caused simply by “too much dye.”
Unstable dye transfer may be associated with inadequate dye fixation, pH imbalance, residual contamination, alkaline residues, previous chemical treatment, buffing residues, or deterioration of the leather’s internal chemistry.
For this reason, dye fixation should not be used as a substitute for proper cleaning and pH restoration.
The Nubuck should first be cleaned and rinsed appropriately, followed by Acidifier 2.0 where required.
Once the leather’s chemistry has been brought back into balance, Fix 2.8 can be used when excessive dyestuff transfer still remains.

Crocking and Dye Transfer

Crocking is the transfer of leather color to another surface through rubbing.
New Nubuck can exhibit crocking when dyestuff has not been adequately penetrated or fixed during tanning and dyeing.
Existing dye-fixing problems may also become more apparent after wet cleaning or chemical exposure.
Before applying Fix 2.8, inspect the Nubuck for loose surface residues and dry-transfer behavior.
Tannery buffing residues can interfere with uniform dye fixation and should be removed before treatment.

When to Use Nubuck Dye Fix 2.8

Use Fix 2.8 when a clean white towel still picks up significant color from the Nubuck after the appropriate cleaning, rinsing, and pH-balancing treatment.

Fix 2.8 is especially useful for:

New Nubuck that transfers color during dry rubbing.
Nubuck that transfers color when damp or exposed to moisture.
Vintage Nubuck with unstable or mobile dyestuff.
Re-dyed or restored Nubuck with continuing color rub-off.
Nubuck where dye migration continues after pH correction.
Nubuck requiring improved wet-rub fastness after restoration.

Important

Fix 2.8 is a dye-fixing treatment, not a stain remover.
If the Nubuck is heavily soiled, greasy, contaminated, or chemically unbalanced, correct those conditions first.
Do not attempt to fix unstable dye while significant surface contamination or loose buffing residue remains, as these may interfere with uniform dye fixation.
Recommended Preliminary Treatment
For excessive dye bleeding or color transfer:

Remove dry soil and loose surface residue with the appropriate Nubuck brush and dry-cleaning method.
Clean the Nubuck thoroughly with the appropriate Leather Doctor® Nubuck cleaner.
Rinse thoroughly to remove suspended contamination and residues.
Apply Acidifier 2.0 where required to help restore the leather’s natural acidic balance.
Towel extract and test with a fresh white absorbent towel.
Repeat the pH-balancing treatment as necessary until excessive bleeding is significantly reduced.
Apply Nubuck Dye Fix 2.8 only when significant dye instability remains.

This sequence follows the Leather Doctor® principle of correcting the leather’s internal chemistry before attempting to stabilize the dyestuff.

Dilution Ratio

1 part Nubuck Dye Fix 2.8 concentrate to 6 parts distilled water.

Mixing Guide - Mix fresh before use.

2oz bottle (mix with 48g distilled water to fill)
4oz bottle (mix with 96g distilled water to fill)
8oz bottle (mix with 195g distilled water to fill)
16oz bottle (mix with 390g distilled water to fill)
32oz bottle (mix with 778g distilled water to fill)

Shake or mix thoroughly before application.

Application Instructions

1. Prepare the Nubuck

Ensure the Nubuck is clean, appropriately rinsed, and free from excessive surface residue.
Always perform a preliminary test in an inconspicuous area.

2. Prepare Fix 2.8

Mix Nubuck Dye Fix 2.8 with distilled water accordingly.
Use the ready-to-use solution fresh.

3. Saturate the Applicator

Soak a clean, white, absorbent Microfiber Towel 3 with the ready-to-use Nubuck Dye Fix 2.8 solution.
The towel should be thoroughly saturated but not excessively dripping.

4. Apply Evenly

Wipe the Nubuck evenly with overlapping strokes.
The saturated towel application serves two purposes at the same time:
It helps remove mobile dyestuff from the surface while saturating the Nubuck with Fix 2.8 to stabilize the remaining dyestuff.
Maintain consistent coverage and avoid treating only isolated spots whenever practical.
Because Nubuck is absorbent and napped, work systematically from one section to the next to achieve even penetration and fixation.

5. Keep the Surface Evenly Wet

Maintain an evenly wet appearance during application.
Where a section begins drying prematurely, lightly reapply the solution to maintain uniform saturation.

6. Extract Excess Solution

Use a clean, folded white absorbent towel to gently extract mobile dyestuff.
Frequently refold the towel and continue using clean sections to prevent redepositing extracted color.

7. Dry Naturally

Allow the Nubuck to dry naturally in open air away from direct heat.
Do not use excessive heat to accelerate drying.

8. Restore the Nap

Once completely dry, gently brush the Nubuck with Nubuck Brush 2 to restore the nap and characteristic finger-writing effect.

9. Inspect When Completely Dry

Do not judge the final result while the Nubuck is still damp.
Once completely dry, test again with a fresh, clean white towel.
Little or no loose color should transfer.
When significant color transfer remains, a second application may be required.

Post-Fix Leather Replenishment

After dye fixation is complete and the Nubuck is completely dry, continue with the Leather Doctor® rejuvenation sequence.

Internal Replenishment

Hydrator 3.3

Helps hydrate and relax the leather fiber structure while preparing it for fatliquoring.

Fatliquor 5.0

Replenishes fat and oil within the leather fiber structure to restore softness, flexibility, and suppleness.

Surface Refinement - After internal replenishment:

Nubuck Conditioner 3.4 / 3.4+

May be used to refine surface feel, reduce friction, and provide non-stick, rub-resistant protection while preserving Nubuck’s natural nap and tactile character.

Leather Doctor® Rejuvenation Sequence

For a Nubuck restoration involving unstable dye:

Clean → Rinse → Acidify → Test → Fix 2.8 → Hydrate → Fatliquor → Condition → Rebrush

The exact cleaning and preparation stages should be selected according to the Nubuck’s actual condition.

Professional Tips

Always test first in an inconspicuous area.
Use distilled water for dilution.
Work evenly over the complete panel or article whenever practical.
Avoid isolated spot treatment when a uniform appearance is important.
Change towel surfaces frequently as loose dyestuff is extracted.
Maintain nap separation during application with Nubuck Brush 2.
Do not attempt to solve excessive dye transfer with Nubuck Dye Fix 2.8 alone when contamination or pH imbalance remains.
Remove loose buffing residue and dry soil before fixation.
Allow the Nubuck to become completely dry before evaluating dye stability.
If significant color transfer remains after the first application, repeat the fixation treatment as required.
After fixation, replenish the leather with Hydrator 3.3 and Fatliquor 5.0 before final conditioning where required.
After complete drying, brush the Nubuck again to restore the natural nap and finger-writing effect.
