Nubuck Degreaser System Kit N5.dr

What is Nubuck Leather?

Nubuck is a premium aniline leather, lightly buffed on the grain side to produce a fine, velvety nap. This open-fiber structure makes it both hydrophilic (water-attracting) and oleophilic (oil-attracting)—behaving like a sponge for body oils, grease, and sweat.

Unlike finished leather, nubuck lacks a protective coating, leaving its collagen fibers directly exposed to contamination and environmental stress.

Why Nubuck is Prone to Oil, Grease & Sweat Damage

Nubuck’s vulnerability comes down to structure and chemistry:

  • Open Fiber Network – Allows deep penetration of oils and residues
  • No Protective Finish – No barrier against contamination
  • Oil Affinity – Fats bond strongly to collagen fibers
  • Capillary Effect – Draws in sweat, salts, and moisture

Over time, sweat contamination can ferment into ammonia, shifting nubuck into an alkaline state, weakening the protein structure and causing:

  • Darkened, matted nap
  • Tackiness or stiffness
  • Dye bleeding or uneven tone
  • Structural weakening

Why Continuous Dampness is Critical (Tannery Principle)

The Leather Doctor® system follows wet-end tannery science, in which processes must occur in a continuously damp state.

Why Nubuck Must Stay Damp:

  • Prevents fiber shrinkage and stiffness
  • Enables chemical migration (wicking of soil and dye)
  • Supports ionic bonding of fatliquor
  • Avoids blotchiness and uneven drying

Key Insight:
Drying between steps interrupts the chemistry chain and can cause irreversible fiber collapse.

The N5.dr System – Sequential Restoration Logic

Degrease → Clean → Rinse → Neutralize → Hydrate → Soften → Condition

Each step dovetails into the next, ensuring the leather remains structurally stable while contaminants are removed.

Step-by-Step Nubuck Degreasing Process

1️⃣ Degreasing – Degreaser 2.2

Breaks down embedded oils, grease, and sweat with a Nubuck-Safe™ low-pH system.

  • Apply with agitation
  • Dwell without drying
  • Extract with a towel until clean

2️⃣ Rinsing – Rinse 3.0

Flushes suspended residues and begins pH stabilization toward the isoelectric range.

  • Spray, agitate lightly
  • Blot and extract

3️⃣ Cleaning – Nubuck Cleaner 3.7

Gently emulsifies general soil without damaging the protein structure.

  • Apply evenly and dwell
  • Extract, then rinse immediately

4️⃣ Rinsing – Rinse 3.0 (Again)

Ensures all residues are removed while maintaining proper acidity balance.

5️⃣ pH Correction – Acidifier 2.0

Restores nubuck’s natural acidic state and prepares fibers for fatliquor bonding.

  • Reinforces internal fiber strength
  • Prevents tackiness and dye instability

6️⃣ Hydrating – Hydrator 3.3

Relaxes and reopens collapsed fibers while redistributing moisture and dye.

  • Promotes even structure
  • Prepares for fatliquor absorption

7️⃣ Fatliquoring – Fatliquor 5.0

Replenishes essential oils and lubricates collagen fibers.

  • Must be applied while damp
  • Restores softness, flexibility, and strength

8️⃣ Conditioning – Conditioner S

Final conditioning step for nubuck.

  • Enhances nap texture
  • Provides rub resistance without coating
  • Restores the signature “finger-writing” effect

System Insight: Why This Works

This is not surface cleaning—it is structural restoration.

By controlling pH, moisture, and ionic charge, the N5.dr system:

  • Removes contamination without damage
  • Rebuilds internal lubrication (fatliquoring)
  • Restores the nap’s visual and tactile integrity
  • Prevents recurring stiffness and tackiness

Available Kit Sizes (Concentrates)

  • 4oz Fill – makes ~0.8 quart
  • 8oz Fill – makes ~1.5 quarts
  • 16oz Fill – makes ~3 quarts

(Always mix with distilled water and shake thoroughly.)

Final Positioning Statement

The Nubuck Degreaser System Kit N5.dr is a complete tannery-aligned solution—not just to clean nubuck, but to restore its chemistry, structure, and signature softness.
