Leather Urine Decontamination — Leather-Safe™ Treatment Instructions

Complete Treatment Instructions for Absorbent and Non-Absorbent Leather

Urine decontamination should begin by identifying the leather, locating the urine pathway, and determining the present condition of the affected leather.

The Leather Doctor® Anti-Urine System uses two formulations designed for different leather behaviors:

Anti-Urine 4.2 — for absorbent 

Anti-Urine 4.5 — for non-absorbent leather

Both treatment pathways begin with appropriate pre-cleaning and use formulations designed within the Leather-Safe™ Zone of pH 3.0–5.0, while the treatment technique is adapted to the way the leather absorbs.

The treatment has to follow the path of the urine.


Before You Begin

Always identify the leather before treatment.

The affected area may no longer behave like the original leather because urine contamination or previous treatment attempts can alter surface absorbency, texture, and finish.

For upholstered furniture, also inspect beyond the visible leather to determine the complete urine pathway.

Where practical:

  • Check cushion seams and edges.

  • Inspect crevices and areas where urine may have entered.

  • Check the underside of cushions.

  • Inspect the bottom of the sofa or chair.

  • Lift or remove the dust cloth when practical.

  • Inspect the wooden frame or moving structural rail.

  • Use a UV black light to help reveal fluorescent traces associated with urine contamination.

Do not treat only where the odor is noticed. Trace where the urine has traveled.


Step 1 — Identify the Leather and Assess Its Condition

A. Determine Leather Absorbency

Perform the Water Absorbency Test directly on the urine-affected area.

Do not rely solely on an unaffected or inconspicuous area. A normally non-absorbent leather surface may become absorbent after urine contamination, while a previous cleaning or treatment attempt may also alter the surface's original absorbency.

The test should therefore reflect the actual condition of the affected leather before treatment.

Observe how readily the affected area accepts water and compare the response with a known unaffected area when useful.

Absorbent Leather

Typical examples include:

  • Aniline leather

  • Semi-aniline leather

  • Suede

  • Nubuck

  • Vachetta

  • Veg-Tan leather

  • Hair-on hide

  • Other porous or absorbent leather

Choose:

Anti-Urine 4.2

The formulation is adapted for deep penetration into absorbent leather.

Non-Absorbent Leather

Protected leather normally has a finish or coating that limits liquid absorption.

Choose:

Anti-Urine 4.5

The formulation is adapted for controlled surface treatment of protected leather.

When Older Non-Absorbent Leather Becomes Absorbent

An older protected leather surface may no longer behave as fully non-absorbent.

Micro-crazing, creases, cracks, and deterioration of the topcoat can create pathways through the protective surface, allowing urine to penetrate into the leather below.

When the affected area has become absorbent and urine has soaked through the surface, treat it according to the absorbent-leather pathway:

Degreaser 4.5 → Rinse 4.5 → Anti-Urine 4.2 → Hydrator 3.3 → Fatliquor 5.0+ → Matching Topcoat, when required → Conditioner 3.2+

The present condition of the affected leather determines the treatment pathway—not simply the leather's original classification.


B. Check Surface Tackiness, Stickiness, or Sliminess

Immediately after assessing absorbency, perform a Wet Hand Test to evaluate the condition of the leather surface.

Urine contamination can adversely affect the leather's surface feel, leaving it tacky, sticky, or slimy. This may indicate deterioration or disruption of the leather texture or its topcoat.

Treatment Decision

If the affected surface shows tackiness, stickiness, or sliminess, Acidifier 2.0 may be required as a condition-dependent step to help stop or correct the adverse effects associated with urine contamination.

Acidifier 2.0 is not automatically required for every urine treatment.

Absorbency determines the Anti-Urine formulation. Surface condition determines whether Acidifier 2.0 is required.


C. Check Surface Sheen

Compare the sheen or gloss of the affected leather with an unaffected area of the same piece.

A noticeable loss of sheen may indicate that the original topcoat has been altered or deteriorated.

After successful urine decontamination, a matching topcoat may therefore be required to restore the original surface appearance and protection.

When a matching topcoat is required, it is applied before Conditioner 3.2+.


Step 2 — Prepare the Leather

Urine contamination may be accompanied by body oils, grease, old conditioner, pet residue, and other surface contamination.

Pre-clean the leather before applying Anti-Urine.

Absorbent Leather

Use:

Degreaser 4.5 → Rinse 4.5

Remove accessible surface contamination while avoiding unnecessary saturation during pre-cleaning.

Non-Absorbent Leather

Use:

Degreaser 7.5 → Soft Rinse 5.0

The Degreaser 7.5 performs the required cleaning function on the protected surface, followed by Soft Rinse 5.0 to complete the preparation stage.

Pre-clean the surface first. The Anti-Urine treatment addresses the urine contamination.


Step 3 — Inspect and Map the Urine Path

Before determining the treatment area, identify where the urine has traveled.

Urine may move farther than the original visible or suspected entry point.

Inspect:

Entry point → seams → crevices → cushion edges → underside → internal upholstery materials

Where practical, inspect beneath the furniture by lifting or removing the dust cloth.

A UV black light may help identify traces that are difficult to see under normal lighting.

Also inspect the wooden frame or moving structural rail, as urine may migrate onto or along these areas.

Follow the Last Trace

The treatment area should extend to the last identified trace of contamination, not merely the location where the odor is strongest.

Follow the urine path. Reach the last trace.


Step 4 — Determine the Treatment Volume

Treatment volume should be based on the estimated extent of urine contamination.

A small amount of solution applied only to the surface may not be sufficient when urine has penetrated deeply into absorbent leather or cushion materials.

As a practical principle:

The treatment volume should be sufficient to follow the contamination pathway.

For a typical cat urine discharge that has penetrated into a cushion, treatment may require an amount comparable to, or potentially greater than, the original urine volume.

In some cases, approximately the same volume or up to twice the estimated urine volume may be required, depending on:

  • Amount of urine

  • Depth of penetration

  • Distribution

  • Absorbency of the materials

  • Previous treatment history

This is a practical guideline, not a fixed dosage formula.

Do not indiscriminately flood the furniture. Apply enough treatment to reach the identified contamination pathway.


Step 5 — Apply Anti-Urine 4.2 to Absorbent Leather

For Aniline, Semi-Aniline, Suede, Nubuck, Vachetta, Veg-Tan, Hair-on Hide, and Other Absorbent Leather

Apply Anti-Urine 4.2 using a controlled saturation technique.

Treat the Entire Affected Panel and Follow the Urine Path

Do not apply the solution only to a small circular spot around the strongest odor.

Instead, wet the entire affected panel evenly from seam to seam, extending treatment along the identified urine pathway.

This is especially important for light- and medium-colored absorbent leather, where isolated wetting can produce visible rings, halos, or tide lines after drying.

The objective is to create a more uniform wet-processing environment across the affected panel while ensuring that the treatment reaches the contaminated leather along the identified urine pathway.

Follow the urine path. Reach the last trace.

Allow Natural Drying

Allow the leather to dry naturally.

Do not force-dry with direct heat.

Allow sufficient time for the treatment to work and for the leather to return to a suitable condition for the next stage.


Step 6 — Reverse Transfer and Structural Relaxation with Hydrator 3.3

After the Anti-Urine 4.2 treatment, use Hydrator 3.3 as the reverse-transfer treatment.

Reverse Transfer

Hydrator 3.3 re-wets the absorbent leather in a controlled manner and helps move dissolved contamination and residues toward the surface for removal.

Anti-Urine 4.2 reaches into the absorbent leather. Hydrator 3.3 helps bring dissolved residues back toward the surface.

Structural Relaxation for Fatliquoring

After the reverse-transfer function, Hydrator 3.3 also relaxes the leather structure and creates a pathway for Fatliquor 5.0+ to penetrate effectively.

Hydrator 3.3 relaxes the structure. Fatliquor 5.0+ follows the pathway.

This gives Hydrator 3.3 two distinct roles within the absorbent-leather treatment:

Reverse transfer → remove dissolved contamination

Structural relaxation → prepare the leather for effective fatliquoring


Step 7 — Restore Absorbent Leather

After the reverse-transfer stage, complete the restoration sequence:

Hydrator 3.3 → Fatliquor 5.0+ → Matching Topcoat, when required → Conditioner 3.2+

Hydrator 3.3

Hydrator 3.3 is not simply a moisturizer.

Its role is to relax the leather structure and open a pathway for Fatliquor 5.0+ to penetrate effectively into the leather fibers.

The relaxed structure allows the fat and oil from Fatliquor 5.0+ to follow the pathway created by the Hydrator and replenish the lubricating components within the leather fiber structure.

Fatliquor 5.0+

Fatliquor 5.0+ replenishes fat and oil within the leather fiber structure after deeper wet processing.

The objective is to restore lubrication, flexibility, softness, and a supple leather feel.

The “+” formulation also imparts a classic leather scent, creating a more refined olfactory experience.

Matching Topcoat, When Required

If the urine contamination or previous treatment has deteriorated or altered the original topcoat, a matching topcoat should be applied before Conditioner 3.2+.

The sequence becomes:

Hydrator 3.3 → Fatliquor 5.0+ → Matching Topcoat → Conditioner 3.2+

When no topcoat restoration is required, proceed directly from Fatliquor 5.0+ to Conditioner 3.2+.

Conditioner 3.2+

Conditioner 3.2+ completes the final surface conditioning stage.

It provides a soft, smooth leather feel, while the “+” formulation also imparts a classic leather scent for a more refined finishing experience.


Step 8 — Apply Anti-Urine 4.5 to Non-Absorbent Leather

For Non-Absorbent Leather

After pre-cleaning:

Degreaser 7.5 → Soft Rinse 5.0

Apply Anti-Urine 4.5 using the prescribed controlled surface-treatment technique.

Because the protective finish limits absorption, the objective is to treat the accessible surface rather than saturate the leather as required for absorbent leather.

Avoid unnecessary flooding of the protected surface.

Allow the treatment to work and dry according to the prescribed application procedure.

If the older protected leather has micro-crazing, creases, cracks, or other topcoat deterioration that allows urine to penetrate into the leather, follow the Anti-Urine 4.2 absorbent-leather pathway instead.


Step 9 — Non-Absorbent Leather

After Anti-Urine 4.5 treatment, complete the system with:

Conditioner 3.2+

Conditioner 3.2+ provides the final surface conditioning stage, delivering a soft, smooth feel and a classic leather scent.

The protected-leather pathway therefore ends with:

Degreaser 7.5 → Soft Rinse 5.0 → Anti-Urine 4.5 → Conditioner 3.2+

When a matching topcoat is required because of deterioration, apply it before Conditioner 3.2+.


Step 10 — Evaluate the Result

After the leather has dried and the treatment sequence has been completed, evaluate the result by checking:

  • Remaining urine odor

  • Previously affected seams and crevices

  • Cushion edges

  • Underside of the furniture

  • Dust cloth

  • Wooden frame / moving structural rail

  • Any other identified part of the original urine pathway

Do not judge the result from the visible leather alone.

If odor remains, return to the urine pathway.

Ask:

Where did the urine travel that has not yet been treated?


When the Odor Remains

Persistent odor after correctly treating the leather may indicate contamination in:

  • Cushion foam

  • Batting

  • Backing

  • Dust cloth

  • Wooden structural components

  • Other absorbent upholstery materials

The leather may have been successfully treated while another contaminated material continues to release odor.

In such cases, inspect and treat the remaining contaminated pathway rather than repeatedly treating only the visible leather surface.

The treatment has to follow the path of the urine—not simply the surface of the leather.


When to Use Acidifier 2.0

Acidifier 2.0 is not a mandatory step in every urine treatment.

When the affected leather shows tackiness, stickiness, or sliminess, Acidifier 2.0 may be required to help stop or correct the adverse effects associated with urine contamination.

Its use should be determined by the condition of the affected leather, not simply by the presence of urine.

The current Leather-Safe™ Anti-Urine system does not require routine urine treatment to follow the older lower-pH sequence.


Important Precautions

Always perform an inconspicuous-area test before beginning full treatment.

Perform the Water Absorbency Test directly on the affected urine area.

Identify the leather correctly before selecting Anti-Urine 4.2 or 4.5.

Check for tackiness, stickiness, or sliminess before treatment.

Check for loss of sheen that may indicate topcoat deterioration.

Do not use isolated spot-wetting on absorbent light or medium-colored leather when a larger affected panel should be treated.

Do not force-dry treated leather with direct heat.

Do not assume that the strongest odor location is the complete contamination area.

Do not flood furniture indiscriminately. Treatment should follow the identified urine pathway and use an appropriate treatment volume.

Where urine has penetrated into internal upholstery materials, leather treatment alone may not be sufficient.

Treat the accessible surface without unnecessary saturation.

The successful treatment pathway is:

Identify → Inspect → Test → Prepare → Treat → Reverse Transfer When Required → Restore → Recheck

The most important rule is:

Follow the path of the urine. Reach the last trace. Treat the contamination. Restore the leather.
