Replenish the Internal Fat and Oil System
Fatliquor 5.0 is applied after the leather has been properly prepared and hydrated with Hydrator 3.3.
Hydrator 3.3 relaxes.
Fatliquor 5.0 replenishes.
The objective is to distribute the Fatliquor emulsion through the hydrated leather fiber structure and replenish the internal fat and oil system.
Before You Begin
Make sure the leather has been:
Identified → Cleaned → Rinsed → Acidified where required → Hydrated
The leather should be clean and properly hydrated before Fatliquor 5.0 is applied.
Do not apply Fatliquor 5.0 over heavy contamination, grease, old oily dressings, or other materials that should first be removed.
For restoration work, follow the appropriate cleaning and wet-processing sequence for the leather and its condition.
Check the Cleaned Surface by Touch
After cleaning and rinsing, lightly feel the cleaned leather surface with your fingertips.
If the surface feels slimy, sticky, or tacky, Acidifier 2.0 is required before Fatliquoring.
If the surface feels clean and smooth to the touch, proceed with hydration.
Touch tells you whether acidification is required.
1. Dilute Fatliquor 5.0
Fatliquor 5.0 is supplied as a concentrate or fill requiring dilution.
Mix:
1 part Fatliquor 5.0 + 5 parts distilled water
Use distilled water for dilution.
Fill Sizes
4 oz Fill → Add 95 g distilled water
8 oz Fill → Add 189 g distilled water
16 oz Fill → Add 378 g distilled water
32 oz Fill → Add 756 g distilled water
For concentrate sizes, maintain the same 1:5 dilution ratio.
Mix thoroughly before application.
2. Apply to the Hydrated Leather
Apply the diluted Fatliquor 5.0 evenly over the hydrated leather.
Use an appropriate:
detailing horsehair brush, foam brush, soft brush, sponge, microfiber towel, or applicator pad.
Work evenly across the leather.
The objective is not to leave a heavy layer on the surface.
The objective is to distribute the emulsion through the hydrated fiber structure.
Allow the leather to absorb the application before adding more.
3. Reapply as the Leather Absorbs
Observe the leather as the Fatliquor is absorbed.
Apply additional light coats as the leather absorbs the Fatliquor.
Allow each application to absorb before applying more.
Stop when the leather is no longer readily absorbing the Fatliquor.
Do not continue applying simply because the surface appears able to take more liquid.
Excessive fat and oil can leave an undesirable greasy feel and may interfere with subsequent redyeing or refinishing.
4. Allow the Leather to Dry Naturally
Allow the leather to dry naturally.
Do not force-dry with excessive heat.
As the leather dries, the water leaves the structure while the fat and oil remain associated with the leather fiber.
Allow sufficient drying time before judging the final result.
Drying time varies according to:

5. Flex and Relax the Leather
Once the leather is dry, gently flex, massage, stake, or work the leather according to its type and construction.
This helps the lubricated fibers move against one another and allows the leather to regain natural flexibility and drapery.
For delicate leather, use gentle movement.
Do not force stiff leather into a shape it cannot safely accept.
6. Inspect the Result
Inspect the leather after drying and flexing.
Look for improvements in:

and original form.
The leather should feel more relaxed and move more naturally.
If the leather still feels depleted, a further light application may be considered after evaluating its condition.
