Leather Doctor® Absorbent Leather Gel Degreaser 4.4 is a high-viscosity controlled gel degreaser developed for absorbent and semi-absorbent leather.
Its controlled gel format helps concentrate the degreasing action where applied while minimizing unnecessary spreading and excessive penetration into the leather.
It helps loosen, capture, and emulsify body oils, sebum, grease, oily stains, and residual oil-based contamination for controlled extraction.
Unlike a conventional free-flowing liquid degreaser, the gel remains more localized during application, providing greater control when working on absorbent leather.
Absorbent Leather Gel Degreaser 4.4 must be followed by Leather Rinse 4.4 to release and extract the spent gel and mobilized contamination.

What Is Absorbent Leather Gel Degreaser 4.4?
- Absorbent and semi-absorbent leather can retain body oils, grease, sebum, and other oily contamination within the surface and near-surface fiber structure.
A freely flowing liquid degreaser may spread beyond the intended treatment area and introduce unnecessary moisture into absorbent leather.
- Absorbent Leather Gel Degreaser 4.4 uses a controlled gel format to provide a more deliberate degreasing process.
It helps:
- Concentrate the degreasing action.
- Cling to the treatment area.
- Loosen oily contamination.
- Capture and emulsify oils and grease.
- Allow controlled dwell time.
- Reduce unnecessary spreading.
- Prepare the contamination for subsequent extraction with Leather Rinse 4.4.
Leather-Safe™ pH 4.4
- Absorbent Leather Gel Degreaser 4.4 is calibrated to pH 4.4, within the Leather Doctor® Leather-Safe™ acidic working range.
The objective is not simply to remove oil.
- It is to remove unwanted contamination while respecting the leather during the wet process.
The controlled pH is especially appropriate for absorbent and semi-absorbent leather where aggressive alkaline cleaning can create unnecessary stress on the leather structure.
Why Is the Gel Format Important?
The purpose of the gel is control.The high-viscosity format helps prevent the degreasing solution from immediately spreading or penetrating deeply into absorbent leather.
This allows the operator to:
- Place the degreaser where it is needed.
- Control the working area.
- Maintain a short dwell period.
- Mobilize contamination before extraction.
- Minimize unnecessary saturation.

Why Is Leather Rinse 4.4 Required?
- Absorbent Leather Gel Degreaser 4.4 is intentionally formulated as a controlled gel.
Once the gel has captured and emulsified the unwanted oils and grease, the spent gel must be removed.
- This is the specific role of Leather Rinse 4.4.
Leather Rinse 4.4 helps:
- Release the spent gel.
- Mobilize emulsified oil and grease.
- Remove residual degreasing material.
- Facilitate towel extraction.
- Maintain a controlled working moisture during extraction.
Absorbent Leather Gel Degreaser 4.4 captures. Leather Rinse 4.4 releases and extracts.
- The two products should therefore be treated as one complete degreasing system, not as an independent cleaner and an optional rinse.
How To Use
Step 1 — Test First
- Always test in an inconspicuous area for color stability and appearance before proceeding.
Step 2 — Apply the Gel
- Apply a small amount of Absorbent Leather Gel Degreaser 4.4 directly to the contaminated area or to a clean Microfiber Towel 3.
- Work gently with a soft-bristled Leather Brush 1 or clean white towel.
- Allow approximately 1–2 minutes of dwell time.
- Do not allow the gel to dry completely.
Step 3 — Apply Leather Rinse 4.4
- Apply Leather Rinse 4.4 to a clean Microfiber Towel 3.
- Avoid unnecessarily flooding the leather directly.
- The towel should be sufficiently moist to perform controlled extraction.
Step 4 — Release & Extract
- Wipe the treated area using controlled linear or cross-hatch passes.
- As the spent gel and mobilized contamination transfer to the towel, move to a clean section.
- Continue until the spent gel and lifted contamination have been effectively extracted.
- Repeat as necessary.
Step 5 — Dry Naturally
- Allow the leather to dry naturally.
- Do not force-dry.
- Once completely dry and equilibrated, inspect the leather before proceeding to the next restoration phase.
Why Is More Rinse Used?
- The two products perform different functions and are therefore not normally consumed in equal quantities.
A practical working ratio is approximately:
1 : 2–3
1 part Absorbent Leather Gel Degreaser 4.4
2–3 parts Leather Rinse 4.4
This is a working-consumption ratio, not a dilution ratio.
The gel is concentrated and remains localized during application.
The rinse is used repeatedly during extraction for:
- Towel wetting
- Release of the spent gel
- Removal of emulsified contamination
- Multiple extraction passes
- Re-wetting the towel as needed
Therefore, using more rinse than gel is an expected part of the system.
Ready for Rejuvenation
- Leather Rinse 4.4 completes the degreasing and extraction phase. It does not replenish the leather.
Once degreasing is complete and the leather has naturally dried, continue as required with:
Hydrator 3.3
Rehydrates and relaxes the leather fiber structure.
