Saddlery Dye Fix 2.8 (Fix 2.8) by Leather Doctor® is a professional water-based dye fixative formulated to improve dye stability in saddles, bridles, reins, breast collars, fenders, jockeys, straps, harnesses, and other equestrian leather prone to color bleeding, crocking, and dye transfer.
Professional Water-Based Dye Fixative for Saddlery, Tack & Equestrian Leather
This product is recommended when loose or unstable dyes transfer onto riding apparel, jeans, gloves, hands, furnishings, or adjacent leather surfaces.
Common examples include:
• Saddle dye rubbing onto jeans or riding pants.
• Tack bleeding color after rain, perspiration, or water exposure.
• Vintage saddlery exhibiting dye migration after restoration.
• Leather previously treated with neatsfoot oil, saddle soap, conditioners, or other traditional leather care products.
• Re-dyed saddlery showing continued color transfer after restoration.
Unlike film-forming sealers, waxes, or coatings that may alter leather feel, Fix 2.8 functions as a Pure Dye Fixative.
Application with a damp white cotton terry towel allows the fixing action to occur within the leather structure while preserving its natural feel, flexibility, breathability, and appearance.
After drying, both the water carrier and active fixing components evaporate completely.
No film, coating, resin, stiffening effect, or visible residue remains on the leather.
Stabilize First. Fix Second.™
Leather Doctor® follows a structural restoration philosophy.
Before fixing dyes, the leather structure should first be stabilized:
- Remove contamination.
- Restore pH balance.
- Stabilize dye.
- Relax structure.
- Replenish lubrication.
- Refine surface feel.
In many cases, proper pH correction alone significantly reduces dye transfer without requiring fixation.
Fix 2.8 is reserved for situations where dye instability remains after stabilization.
Benefits
• Improves dye fixation and reduces color bleeding, crocking, and dye transfer.
• Enhances resistance to moisture-related dye migration.
• Helps reduce dye transfer onto jeans, riding apparel, gloves, and hands.
• Non-film-forming and non-stiffening.
• Leaves no visible residue after drying.
• Preserves the natural appearance and feel of saddlery leather.
• Compatible with Hydrator 3.3, Fatliquor 5.0, and Conditioner 3.2.
• Suitable for saddles, bridles, reins, breast collars, stirrup leathers, fenders, jockeys, straps, belts, harnesses, and other vegetable-tanned leather equipment.
Recommended Preliminary Treatment
For Excessive Dye Bleeding
- Clean thoroughly with Degreaser 2.2 when contamination, oxidized oils, or residues are present.
- Rinse thoroughly with Rinse 3.0.
- Apply Acidifier 2.0 and allow sufficient dwell time.
- Towel extract and test for dye transfer using a clean white towel.
- Repeat Acidifier 2.0 treatment until dye bleeding is significantly reduced.
- Apply Fix 2.8 only when dye instability remains after pH balancing.
Dilution Ratio
1 part Fix 2.8 concentrate to 6 parts distilled water (1:6)
4 oz Fill
Add 98 g distilled water.
8 oz Fill
Add 195 g distilled water.
16 oz Fill
Add 390 g distilled water.
32 oz Fill
Add 778 g distilled water.
Mix thoroughly before use.
Instructions
- Ensure the leather is clean and free from excess residues.
- Dilute Fix 2.8 as directed.
- Soak a clean white cotton terry towel with the solution.
- The towel should be thoroughly damp but not dripping.
- Wipe the entire leather section evenly using overlapping strokes.
- Frequently refold the towel to a clean section as migrated dye is absorbed.
- Treat complete panels, fenders, jockeys, straps, or sections to prevent uneven appearance.
- Allow to dry naturally away from direct heat.
- No rinsing is required.
Post-Fix Structural Restoration
After fixation is complete and the leather is fully dry:
Relax Structure
- Apply Hydrator 3.3 to relax hydrogen bonding, decompress compressed fibers, equalize moisture distribution, and restore fiber mobility throughout the leather structure.
- Hydrator 3.3 does more than restore moisture—it prepares the structure for effective fatliquor replenishment.
Replenish Lubrication
Apply Fatliquor 5.0 to restore the lubricating oils and fats between collagen fibers, improving flexibility, tensile strength, softness, and long-term durability.
Refine Surface Feel
Apply Conditioner 3.2 to refine the surface feel, reduce friction, enhance suppleness, and maintain a smooth, natural finish without stickiness.
Professional Tips
• Use only distilled water for dilution.
• Always test in an inconspicuous area before full application.
• Treat complete sections rather than isolated spots whenever practical.
• Change towel surfaces frequently to prevent redepositing migrated dyes.
• Correcting pH imbalance with Acidifier 2.0 before fixation often substantially reduces dye bleeding and improves final results.
• Dye transfer caused by pH instability should be corrected with Acidifier 2.0 before considering Fix 2.8.
• Saddlery leather previously exposed to neatsfoot oil, saddle soap, water damage, or repeated conditioning may benefit from structural stabilization before dye fixation.
Leather Doctor® Principle
Restore Below Before Refine Above™
A healthy leather surface begins with a healthy leather structure.
By correcting the internal environment first, the surface naturally responds with improved appearance, feel, flexibility, and long-term stability.
