The Leather Doctor 4-Stage System

Clean → Degrease → Stabilize → Refinish

Rule: Each stage must be completed before progressing to the next. Skipping steps leads to adhesion failure and premature damage.

Understanding Each Stage

Surface Contamination

Removes dirt and grime that dull the finish. This is cosmetic cleaning and does not affect structure.

Body Oil Contamination

Removes embedded sweat and oils that weaken the finish and cause darkening over time.

Finish Breakdown (Sticky / Tacky)

Degreasing removes destabilizing oils. Acidifier 2.0 rebalances pH and stabilizes the finish.

Coating Failure (Peeling / Flaking)

This is a structural failure. The original coating has lost adhesion and must be refinished.

Critical Professional Rules

  • Degreasing is mandatory before refinishing — residual oil causes future failure
  • Acidifier 2.0 is essential for sticky/tacky leather
  • Refinishing is a coating reconstruction process, not cleaning
  • Conditioner B reduces friction and extends finish lifespan

Solution Pathways

  • DIY Suitable: Cleaning and light contamination
  • Guided DIY: Moderate oil or early breakdown
  • Professional Recommended: Peeling/flaking (P7 cases)
