Leather Acid Neutralizer pH 8.0 (Basifier 8.0) is a pH 8.0 leather acid neutralizer formulated to stop strong acidic reactions after treatments such as Sweat 1.0 or Tarnish 1.0 within the Leather Doctor® Leather-Safe™ system.
Leather is naturally stable within an acidic pH range of 3.0 – 5.0. When strong acidic agents are used to dissolve mineral deposits, iron stains, or perspiration contamination, a controlled alkaline neutralization step is required to immediately stop further acid reaction.
Basifier 8.0 provides this critical reaction stop step, protecting the leather collagen fiber structure from prolonged acid exposure.
Why Basifier 8.0 Is Necessary
Leather fibers are composed of amphoteric protein collagen, meaning they react to both acids and bases. When exposed to strong acidity for extended periods, collagen may begin to hydrolyze and weaken.
Basifier 8.0 works by:
✅ Immediately neutralizing residual acidity
✅ Stopping ongoing chemical reactions
✅ Stabilizing the fiber structure after acid correction
✅ Preparing leather for proper pH rebalancing with Rinse 4.0
This controlled neutralization step prevents over-acidification and ensures the leather can safely return to its natural pH balance.
Important Usage Notes
Basifier 8.0 is not a general leather cleaner.
Because leather performs best at pH 3–5, unnecessary exposure to alkaline conditions may destabilize tanning bonds and temporarily denature the fiber structure.
Therefore:
✅ Use only when neutralizing strong acidic treatments
✅ Do not apply to healthy leather
✅ Always follow with Rinse 4.0 to restore proper leather acidity
How to Use
1️⃣ Prepare the Solution
- Basifier 8.0 is supplied as a concentrate.
- Dilute with distilled water according to product instructions before use.
2️⃣ Apply to the Treated Area
- Apply evenly onto the leather surface that has been treated with Sweat 1.0 or Tarnish 1.0.
- Lightly agitate using:
✅ Leather Brush 1
✅ Nubuck Brush 2
✅ Suede Brush 3
This ensures even distribution and proper fiber penetration.
3️⃣ Dwell Time
- Allow Basifier 8.0 to dwell for 10 – 30 minutes depending on the severity of the prior acidic exposure.
- This time allows the alkaline solution to fully neutralize residual acidity within the fiber structure.
4️⃣ Restore Proper Leather pH
After neutralization, apply Rinse 4.0 (pH 4.0) to return the leather to its natural acidic balance.
This step:
✅ Re-stabilizes tanning agents
✅ Restores proper leather feel
✅ Prevents alkaline residue
Leather should feel clean and slightly squeaky, indicating correct pH restoration.
5️⃣ Remove Moisture
Blot the surface with a clean absorbent towel to extract excess moisture and residue.
- Avoid excessive rubbing.
- Allow leather to dry naturally before proceeding with conditioning or fatliquoring if required.
Summary
Basifier 8.0 is an essential reaction-control step in the Leather Doctor® Leather-Safe™ restoration system.
When used correctly with Sweat 1.0, Tarnish 1.0, and Rinse 4.0, it ensures that acid correction treatments remain effective while preserving the structural integrity of leather fibers.
